Adopt an AHi School

Whether you want to get active in your community, you can sponsor and mentor the implementation of the AHI HPS model or any component of the model in a school in your locality. You can lead on activities within their locality and work with local donors to implement the AHI Health Promoting School model, which is coordinated and delivered by the local body via teams on the ground in each locality.

The AHI HPS model is simple, scalable and sustainable. It has been piloted and can be easily reproduced in other schools (See the AHI HPS operational model). AHI CIO virtual office offers support to members to do the best work for everyone everywhere you are in the globe. This structure enables AHI to operate with a minimum central office spending allowing all resources to be efficiently used to have the greatest possible benefit for the school communities around the world.

Education

The AHI HPS model understands education in a broader way rather than is traditionally the case. We adopt a constructivist pedagogical approach. We understand that most school across the globe follows a behaviourism pedagogical approach and we respect their choice of pedagogical approach. AHI HPS model does not interfere to the way teachers deliver the content of the minimum curriculum to a class. We believe that a combination of teacher guided and student-centred approach as in the social constructivist pedagogical approach may bring benefits to the behaviourism pedagogical approach rather than to detract from it. We offer a range of curriculum activities that teaches essential life skills to schools running the AHI HPS model. The AHI HPS model provides support for the intellectual, physical and emotional development of school children and their families. Therefore, we contribute to the learning content of the school curriculum leading to improved school achievement. The AHI HPS model educational activities are based on the constructivism theory, in which people learn through experiences and reflection. Teaching is based on the belief that it is more effective to provide children with information to allow them to develop reasoning skills and make rational judgements than to give them the "right" solution to a problem.

Health

AHI Health pexels-photo-806427.jpeg

The AHI HPS model consists of four interlinked components which are education, health promotion activities, health care services and community engagement.  Activities complement each other and impact in a number of health and education outcomes. By example, those in low-income communities tend to have lower levels of education and income, which is associated with having less healthy dietary habits. This is, in part, because of their higher priority for price and familiarity, and their lower priority for health as a motive for food purchase. Poor food choice motives are clearly associated with low socio-economic position and level of education, access to and availability of healthy food in socially deprived areas. Furthermore, to adopt a healthy diet requires enormous determination, motivation and setting clear goals. Thus, adopting a healthy diet is also influenced by mental, emotional and spiritual challenges. AHI HPS model addresses all these central issues to adopt a healthy diet. AHI HPS model demonstrates the benefits of a healthy diet in the health coaching and tackle the socio-psychological barriers and motivators to adopt a healthy diet through the life coaching. AHI HPS model also address the socio-economic barriers through healthy food distribution to the families of the children enrolled in the programme. Healthy diet/Food distribution is delivered in collaboration with existing approaches, for example as adopted by members of the Global Foodbank Network (https://www.foodbanking.org/).

Research

A multi-centre study was designed to assess the implementation and impact of the Affordable Health Initiative (AHI) Health Promoting School (HPS) model. The recruitment of centres and co-investigators is based on dedication and commitment in a team effort to achieve goals that cannot be reached by a single centre effort. The philosophy among collaborators within and between centres is consensus.

Projects

Currently, there are four research centres assessing the AHi HPS model and 20 school have been recruited. The multi-centre study includes one post-doctorate, three PhD candidates, three MSc students and associated researchers. Study centres will continually be recruited to provide a data on a large sample of schools from a number of countries and all continents.
